This training has been designed to help students be prepared to discover as many employment opportunities as possible.

Whether students are interested in working locally or abroad, Canadian Tourism College is the first step in the right direction to making a tourism career happen.

In the information below, students will find a list of all the courses that are included in this two year training program.

English for Tourism

The tourism industry is continually growing. The need for skilled workers to fill these positions by employers continues to grow with the increasing demand of people who travel. It is important that those interested in a tourism career have a good basic understanding of the five sectors of the tourism industry. Due to the attraction of studying in Vancouver & Canada and because of the diversity in ethnic backgrounds, many students enrolling in tourism training programs have English as a Second Language. We have found that these students may be unfamiliar with Canadian culture, methods of instruction and the day-to-day interaction with Canadian students in a training institute like Canadian Tourism College.

The English for Tourism curriculum is designed to provide students with fundamental information on the tourism industry in Canada. The training will help students to become familiar with the teaching methods used in Canadian colleges in an adult learning environment.

The Tourism Industry

In the tourism industry course students will learn how to describe tourism, study the history of tourism by looking at important events that have shaped it, forecast the future of tourism by looking at potential employment opportunities that exist, research the number of people expected to travel, the type of trips they would prefer to take and define government roles in tourism by looking at national organizations, regulations and laws in Canada.

Business Skills

In the business skills course students will learn how to work in a business environment, be introduced to typical business machines such as business telephones, facsimile machines, photocopiers and computers. Students will practice methods common to a business office in tourism such as filing, banking and word processing. Students will learn to apply telephone etiquette skills preferred by Canadian businesses for day-to-day communication in a role-play environment.

Interpersonal Skills

In this course students will develop interpersonal skills that are used on a daily basis at Canadian Tourism College and can be used at other North American educational institutes. Students will learn about daily social and business interactions, learn how to deliver an oral and visual presentation, understand the roles of individuals participating in group discussions through role-play, investigate the etiquette and methods for organizing a social function, learn problem-solving methods, comprehend conflict resolution and gain an understanding of humour used as a method of communicating, handling stress and as entertainment in a Canadian learning environment.

Canadian Cultures

Students will identify the meaning of the word “culture”, recognize the individual aspects that make up Canadian culture, explore the beliefs of Canadian people based on their history, customs, traditions and ceremonies.

Students will explore the behaviour patterns of Canadians as influenced by their general way of life and heritages, explore Canadian life through observation and experience, learn to identify differences between cultures, learn to acknowledge cultural differences by examining the positives and negatives of alternative ways of dealing with life experiences, and to learn to perform day-to-day tasks in ways that are considered common in Canada.

Travel and Tourism

The Travel & Tourism curriculum combines the highest level of Travel & Tourism training in Canada with the internationally recognized certification in digital literacy.

This program will set students apart from the rest with the world’s first industry validated standards-based training and certification program for basic computing, Internet knowledge and skills by IC3 which is the only global, credible, portable, and worldwide standard for digital literacy.

For many tourism businesses and organizations, Microsoft Office skills are no longer a luxury, but an absolute necessity. Students seeking academic success and entry into the business world can meet this demand with Microsoft Office Specialist certification. This certification is a credential recognized by educators and tourism employers around the world.

Students will become more employable with a diverse set of skills that combine digital literacy and tourism. This training is designed for those wishing to enter the tourism industry and work with airlines, hotels, travel agencies, tour companies, cruise lines and an endless variety of positions in Tourism related businesses. This training will provide students with the current levels of knowledge and education demanded by today’s Tourism employers and with valuable skills transferable to many sectors and segments of the office environment.

Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³)

This program is the world's first validated standards-based training and certification program for basic computing, Internet knowledge and skills. Successful completion of IC³ ensures students have the knowledge and skills required for basic use of computer hardware, software, networks, and the Internet. Microsoft Word (Core & Expert)

Microsoft Excel (Core & Expert)

Microsoft Access (Core)

The Office Specialist program provides computer program literacy, measures proficiency, and identifies opportunities for skills enhancement. Successful candidates receive an Office Specialist certificate that sets them apart from their peers in the competitive job market. The certificate is a valuable credential recognized worldwide, as proof that an individual has the desktop computing skills needed to work more productively and efficiently.

The Office Specialist program is offered at two levels of certification: Core and Expert. Core is an introduction to the computer application, whereas Expert is an advanced level of the corresponding computer application.
